Erika Cheng MD is a Family Physician who practices in remote communities with large First Nations populations. Her medical practice includes emergency, hospital, long-term care, palliative care, outreach, and community clinic settings, as well as being the local medical director for the Bella Coola General Hospital for many years. Dr. Cheng also provides therapy for Complex Trauma and Dissociation, has basic training in EMDR, and has extensive experience in healthcare provider education in the field of trauma. As one of the founding Directors of “Beyond the Cycle of Trauma Institute” she has been heavily involved in training teachers, community support workers, adoptive parents, counsellors and healthcare providers to work more effectively with trauma survivors. She is also the Executive Producer of the Reaching Past the Cycle of Trauma© series of short films, co-created with the late Dr. Sandra Wieland. These three films are aimed at promoting” Right Brain Based” learning of key behaviors needed to help shift individuals, families, organizations or communities past the cycle of trauma. Dr. Cheng is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Family Practice at the University of British Columbia, and a Fellow of the College of Family Physicians of Canada. She is the author of the book, “This is Me Now – Re-opening the Door to Parenting: Study Guide for Parenting Past the Cycle of Trauma”; and “The Handbook of Trauma-Informed Practice Essentials” (projected publication: summer 2020). She received her training in psychodynamic psychotherapy from Sandra Wieland PhD, who was a former Board member of EMDR Canada.
